Indonesia Young Leaders Programme

“Implementing this project has taught me the importance of community involvement, especially the role of parents and schools in supporting children’s literacy development.”

The overall aim of this project is to design a better approach and learning methods and tools on basic literacy skills for indigenous Papuan students (pupils) at SDN Inpres Angkasapura , Jayapura City of Papua Province.

Main Objectives:

  • To improve Basic Literacy Skills of Indigenous Papuan Students
  • To provide Culturally Sensitive and Supportive Learning Spaces
  • To involve parents and the wider school community in the learning process, encouraging shared responsibility for children's literacy development.
  • To build the capacity of student teachers (especially young women) by involving them as co-facilitators, helping them apply inclusive teaching strategies in real contexts.
  • To Raise Awareness and Support Indigenous Education through Public Engagement

Elsye’s action project responds to the urgent need for foundational literacy support among Indigenous Papuan children who face difficulties with reading, writing, and counting due to limited access to quality education and a lack of supportive learning environments. Her project provides after-school tutoring classes at SDN Inpres Angkasapura in Jayapura, aiming to boost students' literacy skills in a safe, interactive, and culturally relevant setting.

Through collaboration with the school, parents, and two prospective primary school teachers, the program delivers engaging and child-centered learning sessions. The initiative has so far reached 29 students (14 boys, 15 girls) and also involved their parents in the process to ensure a strong support system. Although formal outcomes are still in development, early feedback shows strong parental enthusiasm and a positive learning atmosphere that is gradually building student confidence.

The project is currently entering its second stage, with efforts focused on setting up a consistent class schedule, gathering learning materials, and documenting progress via short video reels for public engagement on social media. With approximately IDR 5,000,000 (NZD 500) spent so far, Elsye is learning the importance of community involvement, flexibility, and clear communication—especially when adapting to the needs of young learners and balancing various stakeholder expectations.
